It has been very rare the amount of times that Beijing could claim decent air quality. On an average, heavy smog would linger for several days. This type of air pollution is known to increase the risk of heart and respiratory diseases and outdoor air pollution was officially deemed a cancer-causing agent in 2013.
The city has recently banned its residents from burning coal and small factories that emitted pollutants were shut down in order to minimize the level of pollution across the city. Throughout China, 28 cities were targeted to reduce their coal consumption and strive for cleaner air. Their actions have paid off thus far, but the Chinese government intends to take further action and is proposing the use of cleaner alternatives by 2020.
